We love when families as questions! So here is some additional information on our family and our programs. If you have questions that aren’t answered here please send us an email, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: How long have you been running the camps?
A: 2018 was our first year of 1/2 Day Summer Camps. Since 2015 we have been running individual farm classes on a smaller scale. Our current farm customer families love these classes and have requested that we expand into providing more time for their children to be exposed to farm chores and the Army values.
Q: What type of religion is your family?
A: We are Christians. Technically, “nondenominational” but most importantly we believe:
- In God. Our God is One but is manifested in Three Persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit being co-equal. (I John 5:7).
- The Bible is the inspired Word of God. (I Thessalonians 2:13, II Timothy 3:16, II Peter 1:21)
- God is Love and we, as His children, are required to show love to others. (John 15:12, John 13:34-35)
Bible verses shared during summer camp will either be from the NKJV or NIV.
Q: Who will be teaching the children?
Primary teacher is Mariel Barreras, Co-Owner of Barreras Family Farm.
Mariel is an Army spouse and mother of seven kiddos. She has a Masters in Business Management and for 5 years was owner and operator of Little Adventures Child Day Care in Clarksville, TN before closing the business to homeschool her children. Mariel’s passion is for giving other moms a place to rest and helping other children grow and bloom.
Anthony is Co-Owner of Barreras Family Farm as well as an Officer in the United States Army. His passions include his family and inspiring other families to succeed in their God given dreams. Anthony spends much of his “free” time mentoring beginning and Veteran farms. During Summer Camps, Anthony is an active participant in the farming classes, helping kids safely build projects and encouraging them to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
The Barreras boys are also active participants in all educational activities. The older boys assist in leading the classes while the younger boys manage the farm critters and set a good example of obeying the farm rules.
Anthony, Mariel and the two oldest boys are all CPR and First Aid certified.
Nicole Humlicek, wife, and mother to 4 children. She is married to her high school sweetheart for almost 10 years. Nicole has a background in Early Childhood Education from Southeast Community College in Lincoln and has worked in daycare for 14 years. The Humlicek family has two dogs and six chickens. Nicole loves spending time with family, their small group through Coram Deo Church, baking/cooking, gardening, and learning more about the outdoors! She is CPR and First Aid certified.
A: We started our program while stationed in CA in 2013. After PCSing (moving) to Offutt AFB in 2014, we continued to grow and expand all of our farm programs, including our Rent-a-Chick Educational Program.
Q: Do chicks ever die?
A: Yes, sometimes they do. Even when families follow all the directions in our Chick Health & Safety class, accidents can happen. Even for us as farmers, accidents happen. Two of the most important things we as farmers and educators strive for is: 1. To learn something of value, What could be done differently to prevent it from happening again? 2. Sharing with families the circle of life and the great opportunity they have to love on the chicks. We work with parents to help their children understand life and death. There is no cookie-cutter process. Together, we work with each child and each different situation. (heart)
Q: Do you eat these chicks/chickens?
A: No! The chicks in our Rent-a-Chick program are egg layers and live a full life on our farm supplying the Omaha and surrounding community with eggs. Our meat birds are a different breed, broiler chickens.
Q: Do you rent out any other animals?
A: We get asked all the time to rent our our bunnies and goats, but no. Safety of the animals in our #1 priority and #2 is a great experience for each family. We do however bring animals to birthday parties and other family events, always in the company of two of our farm hands.
Q: What church do you go to?
A: Our family attends Faith Family Church on 96th and Blondo.
Q: What form of payments do you accept?
A: Cash, check, credit card.
